Officials provide tips for lake river swimming after 8-year-old girl goes missing

With many pools closed from COVID-19 restrictions, emergency officials are asking you to be careful around open water, such as lakes and rivers. This comes as an 8-year-old went missing in the Platte River.The Sarpy County Sheriff's Office has these tips to keep in mind before you jump into the water:Never swim alone. Make sure there is someone watching whoever is in or around open water.Always wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket that fits.Make sure there's no chance of it slipping off young children.Know your limitations.Avoid swimming in water you cannot stand up in. Take physical fitness and medical conditions into consideration before swimming.Swim sober.Know how to call for help.Sheriff Jeff Davis stressed to know the area you're swimming in. Davis said many area rivers have undercurrents, snags, debris and sinkholes. Sandpits can also be dangerous with sudden drop-offs and unstable shores. Usually, sandpits are on private property. It's important you have permission to use them.Water temperatures can also vary because of deeper water and currents. Hypothermia can set in quickly.
