'It's not rocket science': COVID-19 survivor asks public to wear masks

Gambar
Tommy Shapard says he thought he was going to die from COVID-19 in March. Now, he's asking the public to wear masks to slow the spread of the virus. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Exactly three months ago Thursday, Tommy Shapard filmed videos of himself saying goodbye to his wife and three kids in the hospital. He thought COVID-19 was going to kill him. "I'm so proud of all of you and all that you've done," he said in one of the videos. Three months later, Shapard said his recovery is going well. He said he's able to go on walks, swim and go to the gym. "After a good workout, I feel good, and I think I'm slowly improving," he said. ...

Are "Self-Rescue" Swim Classes For Kids Safe?

Gambar
On the last day of her ISR swim lesson,  Maria Feeney's one-and-half-year-old daughter Biella picked out a Sophia the First dress to wear. Later that day, as Feeney watched, an instructor placed a dressed Biella in a pool face down multiple times: once, while seated facing the water, another while seated with her back to the water, a final time dropped into the pool feet-first from above. Each time, Biella successfully flipped over and floated on her back. She passed with flying colors. By age two, she was swimming the length of a pool underwater independently. In recent years, videos have circulated online of infants during swim lessons, face down in pools, struggling to flip over as adults stand by, eventually making it to their back and floating serenely. For some this is a sight of abject horror and obvious neglect. For those familiar with ISR swim lessons, it's simply how the process works. Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) is the largest source for self-rescue lessons. The o...

Boating and swimming safety tips while on the lakes this summer

Texas Game Wardens recommend wearing a life jacket, avoiding alcohol and knowing how to swim before hitting the water. SMITH COUNTY, Texas — Now that summer is here, more people are cooling off by the rivers and lakes.  "The lakes are especially packed right now," Todd Long, Texas game warden serving the Gregg County area, said. "Not only is it summer time, the kids are out of school, but we have the added crowds from the COVID-19 pandemic." Game Warden Long recommends boaters and swimmers conduct a checklist before hitting the water. "First and foremost wear a life jacket, slow down, use common sense, common courtesy," Long said.  ...

How Will Coronavirus Protocols Work At Wayne Swimming Facilities?

Gambar
WAYNE, NJ — With both James W. Roe Memorial Pool and Captain Michael Kilroy Memorial Park open daily beginning this week, swimming in Wayne Township has started for the summer, but it will look different this year. The coronavirus pandemic has delayed the opening of public and private swimming pools across the state, and now as these facilities begin to reopen, it will be with a new set of rules and regulations. Wayne Township has posted the guidelines on their website, and they include everything from pool access to cleaning and disinfecting to what to do if lightning strikes during pool hours. (Yes, the coronavirus has even shifted weather policies.) Below are some highlights of the new regulations: Pool entry will be done one group at a time. Guests will form a single file line, adhering to socially distanced floor markings. The pool is members only until further notice, meaning guests will not be granted entry. Guests must maintain six-feet of distance from each other on the pool d...

Swim trunks come in myriad styles colors and fabrics

Gambar
Q Our pool club is closed this summer and luckily I've been invited to swim in my neighbor's pool. He is always in fashion and all I have to wear are my old spandex trunks. What should I order online to wear? A Well, one thing not to wear are those old spandex trunks. They are too tight, too short and too out-of-date for wearing anywhere today, even to a neighbor's pool. And, lucky for you, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of options to choose from without leaving home. When I checked online, I found every color, every pattern and every look imaginable. So many, in fact, that you might have trouble choosing. They even have a few of those old spandex trunks among their offerings. Skip those, and then decide which styles you like. Consider: LENGTH -- They come in all lengths from short to knee-length. But the best length for swim trunks is a bit shorter than street shorts, and that means several inches above the knee. STYLE -- Swim trunks should be close-fitti...

Swimming Safety: Making sure kids are prepared

Gambar
BEAVERCREEK, Ohio (WDTN) – As pool season gets underway, there is concern about an increased risk of drowning. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, most child drownings take place at home during the summer. As families emerge from quarantine and visit pools and other bodies of water, Aqua-Tots wants to make sure your kids are prepared. The school hopes to equip children with the essential skills to make them safe and comfortable around water. "We're putting cell phones away and making our primary focus be the children in the water, setting up barriers around our home pools, and taking swim lessons to prepare for water safety," said Brittany Haley, General Manager of Aqua-Tots Beavercreek. Drownings are the leading cause of unintentional death among children ages 1 to 4. Grab the FREE WDTN News App from the Apple Store or Google play. Stay up to date with all the l...

DC-area swimming pools reopen with restrictions

Gambar
Miss lounging by the pool and sipping a frosty drink this summer? You may still get the chance, while observing these coronavirus restrictions. Here's what you need to know. But as restrictions are eased, swimming pools and water attractions are starting to reopen. Here are the statuses of swimming pools, water parks and splash parks in the area. DC Under ReOpen DC guidelines, communal pools may only start to reopen on the third stage of reopening, with limited capacity and safeguards when there is sporadic transmission. This stage allows for a gathering of up to 250 people. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said on June 17 that the District is on track for Phase Two reopening next week. Department of Parks and Recre...
